Another find from Pandora. I love it when they find me talented people that can sing. Check out his website for more of his stripped down versions of songs from his latest release.

City and Colour

The first song by City and Colour I heard was "Hello, I'm In Delaware" and I was pretty much a fan from there.

So ready to hear the new album...

Tracy Chapman

Official Website: http://www.tracychapman.com

So if you're new to this blog, you'll learn real fast that I am a self-confessed Pandoraaholic (if that's even a word, if not, I just invented it so don't steal it). I was listening to my station and Tracy Chapman came on. I've heard her numerous times (the radio station I worked for in college played the mess out of her song "Give Me One Reason"), but when listening to her song "Fast Car" I made up my mind that she has one of the most heartfelt, sincere deliveries in that song. I'm not going to put a long winded profile of her on this post, you can check out her website and probably get all the info you need, but I'll let this video speak for itself.

Horse Feathers

Official Website: http://horsefeatherstheband.com

Horse Feathers is an American folk group started by Idaho native Justin Ringle. Ringle moved to Portland, OR in 2004 and began focusing on acoustic music, playing open mics and using the name Horse Feathers. Ringle met multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick in 2005, after hearing a couple of Justin's demos and the pair hit the studio in 2006 to give them some fine tuning which resulted in their debut album, 'Words are Dead'. Later that year, Peter's sister Heather Broderick joined the group on cello and by 2007, Horse Feathers began featuring a rotating cast of instrumentalists backing Justin's guitar and vocals. The fall and winter of 2007 saw more studio time for the group and they recorded 'House With No Home,' which was released on Kill Rock Stars in the spring of 2008. Peter left the country to pursue music in Europe around this time, and so Nathan Crockett was enlisted to cover violin duties. Several months later, Heather also left the group to pursue other musical projects and cellist Catherine Odell came on board. The current lineup was rounded out at the beginning of 2009 when Sam Cooper joined as a multi-instrumentalist. As a four piece, the group has been touring extensively and released a new album entitled 'Thistled Spring' on Kill Rock Stars, April 20th, 2010.

Jose Gonzalez

Official Website: http://www.jose-gonzalez.com/

I don't know that I could ever give Pandora enough credit for introducing me to so many good artists, but here again is another artist I discovered through my Pandora station and have been hooked on a while...Swedish born singer-songwriter Jose Gonazalez. Yes, you read that right, born in Sweden to Argentine parents, Jose grew up listening to Latin folk and pop music, and Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez.

Gonzalez spent his early years playing with hardcore punk and rock bands. Some of this influence can still be heard in his music, though he is better known for a trademark soft voice and his solo classical guitar from which he seems to drain a wall of sound.

Gonzalez released Veneer in 2003 while studying for a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg, which he has yet to complete (a music career can kind of get in the way of something like that). Most of Gonzalez's music consists of originals, but he also covers a number of other artists as diverse in genre as fellow Swedish act The Knife, Bruce Sprinsteen, and Massive Attack.

Below is a live performance of his track "Deadweight on Velveteen".

González is also a member of Junip, along with Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn.

Here's is a live performance of Junip's "Rope and Summit" from the EP with the same title...

Alexi Murdoch

Official Website: http://www.aleximurdoch.com/

Alexi Murdoch is a singer-songwriter born in London to a Greek father and Scottish-French mother. Murdoch was raised in Athens and lived there until he was 10 and then the family packed up and moved to Scotland.

Murdoch moved to the U.S. in 1998 and studied at Duke University before moving to LA.

He gained attention after LA DJ Nic Harcourt played his music on KCRW which lead to further attention from local music supervisors in the TV and film industry.

Alexi self-published his Four Songs EP in November of 2002 which was sold through indie record stores and CD Baby where it sold over 50,000 copies becoming the site's all-time bestselling record. The following year he took his act to the stages of South by Southwest and the Sundance Film Festival.

2006 saw the release of his first full-length release, Time Without Consequence which he released on his own label, Zero Summer, turning down offers from major labels so that he could maintain creative control over his projects. Music from the album has turned up in many TV episodes including The O.C., House, Prison Break, Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money, Ladder 49, Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, Without a Trace, and numerous others. Murdoch's music was also featured in the film "Away We Go".

In 2008 Murdoch was the opener for Alanis Morrisette's tour and went on to his own headline tour in 2009.

Murdoch released his second full-length album, "Towards the Sun" this year. He is currently offering the title track through his website.

Great mix of tunes from Andrew Ripp...check them out.

Iron and Wine

Official Website: http://www.ironandwine.com/

Samuel Beam is an American singer-songwriter better known by his stage and recording name Iron & Wine. He has released four full-length studio albums, a handful of EPs and singles, as well as a few releases available as download-only, which include a live album (a recording of his 2005 Bonnaroo performance).

Beam spent his early years in South Carolina before moving to Florida to attend school and now lives outside Austin.

Beam took his performing name Iron & Wine from a dietary supplement named "Beef Iron & Wine" that he found in a general store in 1998 while in film school. Beam was setting up lighting in the store for a film project and noticed the supplement on a store shelf, dropped the "Beef" and the rest is history.

Here is a video for my favorite Iron and Wine track, "Naked As We Came"...

Josh Rouse

Official Website: http://www.joshrouse.com/

Josh Rouse is a singer-songwriter born in the small town of Paxton, Nebraska. His father was in the military, which meant Josh moved to a number of places throughout the Midwest. Rouse attended Austin Peay State University, and following his time there, he eventually settled down in Tennessee, where he met some locals and began recording.

His first recordings were put to tape and eventually became his debut release, Dressed Up Like Nebraska. The release garnered critical acclaim and allowed him to be able to tour and perform full time. He has released 15 albums up to this point. His music has been featured on a variety of television shows and movie soundtracks.

His latest album, El Turista, is said to be a perfect fit with Getz/Gilberto and Paul Simon's "Graceland" if one would be so inclined to shuffle them together. Below is a free download of one of his EPs. Enjoy!

Website: Covered In Folk

Website: http://coverlaydown.com/

I came across this website about a week ago while looking for other information on a band I'll be posting on later and have been checking it out periodically. The site as the title suggests covers covers (yes that was intentional) of songs from all genres of music remade in a "folk" style. Pretty good stuff, check it out.

Jack Johnson

Official Website: http://www.jackjohnsonmusic.com/

To write about (primarily) acoustic music and not mention Jack Johnson would be a gross oversight and since I've written about 2 artists that are on his label, I figured it was about time to introduce him to those that haven't heard of him.

Jack Johnson is a singer-songwriter, surfer and musician. He was born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He is the son of well-known surfer Jeff Johnson. Jack took an interest in surfing at an early age and at 17, became the youngest invitee to make the surfing finals at the Pipeline Masters on Oahu's north shore. Unfortunately, one week later, his stint as a professional surfer was ended when he suffered a surfing accident at the Pipeline that put over 150 stitches in his forehead and knocked a few of his teeth out.

He is a key organizer in the Kōkua Festival. He currently has sold 8 million albums worldwide.

His highest–selling album is Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George, with 4 million albums shipped worldwide, due to the success of the 2006 film.

He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with a degree in film. While in college, he developed his passion for music, and played rhythm guitar for a local party band.

Johnson's professional career began after befriending G. Love while surfing.

Johnson then co-directed Thicker Than Water, a surf documentary that was released in 2000, for which he also composed the soundtrack.

Here's a couple of Johnson's videos, starting with my kids' favorite, "Upside Down" and a live version of "Better Together".
